1at reading 2Mac 7,1-2.9-14 * from Psalm 16 * 2nd reading 2Ts 2,16 - 3,5 * Gospel Lc 20,27-38

Two are the teachings that we receive from the answer that Jesus offers to the Sadducees who wanted him to put him in difficulty. Sure of their own arguments, they intended to put his belief in the existence of Paradise, or better of the beyond, and in this manner, they ridiculed him undermining his authority infront of the people who was listening to him with trust. The Lord with simplicity, but with sureness and clarity, stops them and makes them see their own shortsightedness, not only as regards to the future world, but also as regards to the other fundamental aspect of our life, our relationships in this world. He starts with the nuptial relationships. These are serious things and important for men, but they are not to be made absolute. The marital relationship is a relation of passage, one of the possible ways of life. Its aim is to continue the generations and thus it is important. It is sustained by the sexual pleasures and the majority of men want it, thinking that they find consolation in it. But in the future life, after the resurrection of the dead, the relations between men will need to continue the generations and will not need to find the physical or psychological needs that they have now. In the future life the situation of men will be all new, with joys given by God which are unknown to us. They can only be enjoyed by those who, for the love of God, renounce them already from this world.

We must not doubt the future life because God Himself, in the Scriptures, makes referral. He makes himself know and all men call Him by his name as he says to Moses: “The Lord is the God of Abram, god of Isaac and Jacob”. If these men stop existing God would himself be inexistent. If his name is that, this means that the 3 patriarchs, and this all other men lived before us, are present to his love. They are “living” because we do not know in what way they lived.

The Saducces need to re-believe, and with them all those who lived a good life, convinced that after there will be nothing.   If this was true, what scope had the life of Jesus himself? Why did he took the cross? For whom did he speak, labored, made miracles, stayed awake in prayer? Why did he call the disciples, why did he chose the apostles? For which motive the Father sent him to incarnate for us and to face our death?

If Jesus is here, if he spoke e labored, it is a sign that we are precious in the eyes of God and we must be saved from Hell. The world in which we live has been moving through the wider road which leads to death and destruction. We are constantly in danger of being overwhelmed and sucked and thus lost. The apostle writing to the Thessalonians, repeats. He was made the carrier of that “world of the Lord” necessary so that “we will be freed from the corrupt and evil men”. Infact, “the Lord is faithful: he will confirm you and he will protect you from the Evil One”. The evil one sows the darnel, he will take away the good seed from the heart of the faithful, he will try to occupy their mind and house. He did this with Mary of Magdalene, until se met Jesus. We will try to stay near him, so that the enemy will not come near us, as the wolf will not approach the sheep but are under the care of the shepherd.

The life faithful to God will be persecuted. Already in the second century before Christ the Hebrews had to face terrible persecutions. We have heard this in the first reading. A mother with her 7 sons was obliged to renounce her own faith in God, disobeying some commandments. However, she encourages her sons to obey God and not the evil of men. And they died one by one in the torments of torture. The mother was proud: they honored her maintaining the faith in the resurrection of the dead. Today we are under trial right and left, and our faith is tried. On the one side, there are the beliefs in the paganism coming from Hinduism and Buddhism and from theory new ideologies, they want to make us forget the commandments of Gods and make us slaves of the material goodness. On the other part a religion ‘strong” want to physically put us away. What shall we do? We must pray so that to us will be given the spirit of witness, the Holy Spirit wo continues to praise the Father and glorify the Son with our obedience to his Word!
