WAY OF THE CROSS

Crocifissione - Cappadocia

VIA CRUCIS

WAY OF THE CROSS

Parce, Domine,

parce populo tuo;

ne in aeternum

irascaris nobis.

Spare, Lord,

spare your people:

Be not angry

with us forever.

Preparatory prayer for

The Way of the Cross

  1. P. In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
  2. A. Amen

  1. P. The Lord be with you.
  2. A. And with your spirit.

  1. P. Let us pray

O God our Father, we want to contemplate the mystery of the passion and death of your only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We ask you to grant us, through this contemplation, the fruits of the Redemption. May the love for Jesus grow in us and, having become an instrument of your love for all human beings, we may reach you filled with the Holy Spirit. Have mercy on us and save us!

Through Christ our Lord.

  1. A.

Leader: Have mercy on us, O Lord.          - Miserere nostri, Domine.
All: Have mercy on us.                        - Miserere nostri.

Stabat mater dolorosa
juxta Crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat Filius.

At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to her Son to the last.

1st Station

Jesus is condemned to death

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “They kept on shouting at the top of their voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And their shouts kept growing louder. Pilate then gave his verdict: their demand was to be granted.” (Luke 23,23-24)

  1. Human beings have decided your death, Jesus, and prepare to execute it. Your death sentence is a consequence of sin. Not of yours, but of ours, of that of all humanity. Sin can not tolerate the innocent, condemns it. Even my sin is present and gives strength to the cries of the people and to the decision of Pilate.

  1. Jesus, you who are meek and humble of heart, have mercy on us!

You who are as silent as a lamb        have mercy on us!

You who are obedient unto death,    have mercy on us!

  1. Holy Father, who sees your Son despised and hated by human beings, called to be your children, give us light so that we may recognize our faults and their gravity. Give us strength as well so that we may begin a journey of sincere and resolute conversion.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.        - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.               - Miserere nostri.

Cuius animam gementem,

Contristatam et dolentem,

Pertransivit gladius

Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
all His bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword has passed.

 2nd Station

Jesus is laden with the Cross

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. When they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his own clothes. They led him out to crucify him.” (Mark 15:20).

“Yet ours were the sufferings he was bearing, ours the sorrows he was carrying, while we thought of him as someone being punished and struck with affliction by God”. (Isaiah 53:4)

  1. Jesus, I would like to enter your heart to contemplate your love by which you accept to carry the cross. That love, by which you welcome the wood of torture, is a mystery of meekness and obedience. You said to the Father: “Not mine, but your will be done”. Your eyes gently meet those of the soldiers, who still do not accept you and do not realize they are loved by you.

  1. P. Jesus, you who love those who kill you, have mercy on us!

You who welcome the cross from the

hands of the Father,                              have mercy on us!

You who gently look at us sinners,          have mercy on us!

  1. P. O merciful Father, the cross of Jesus is a mystery of love that is still inexplicable to our minds. You know our effort to deal with the climb that leads us to you, grant us to bring our crosses with love.

Through  Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.           - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.                    - Miserere nostri.

O quam tristis et afflicta
fuit illa benedicta,
mater Unigeniti!

O how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother, highly blest,
of the sole-begotten One.

 3rd Station

Jesus falls for the first time

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. R. “The punishment reconciling us fell on him, and we have been healed by his bruises.” (Isaiah 53:5) “Your hand has pressed down upon me. I am twisted and bent double, my heart is throbbing, my strength has failed, the light has gone out of my eyes. Friends and companions shun my disease, even the dearest of them keep their distance.” (Psalm 38)

  1. R. Your fall to the ground, Jesus, is a new suffering, result of your love and offering to the Father. You fall, Jesus, your body is slumped, your pain increases. You are tragically alone even in the midst of the crowd you love. No one comes forward to help you, no one lets himself be moved to pity. You are alone. Your love alone must support the world: your love is the only one that can save the earth from the continuous temptations and sins of lukewarmness and selfishness that now weigh on you.

  1. P. You who bear in silence insults and beatings, have mercy on us!

You who make strong those

who have shown their weakness,          have mercy on us!

You who love each of us

every day with patient love,                have mercy on us!

  1. P. Father, friend of human beings, you have allowed your Son to fall to earth: grant us, to lift up our hearts to you, so that they may be filled by your own love.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.     - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.              - Miserere nostri.

Quae mœrebat et dolebat,
pia Mater, dum videbat
nati pœnas inclyti.

Christ above in torment hangs,
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.

 4th Station

Jesus meets his Blessed Mother

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. R. “Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘Look, he is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is opposed- and a sword will pierce your soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare’.” (Luke 2:34-35)

  1. R. Lord Jesus, you allowed Mary to join your path. Now she is united with you to offer herself to the inscrutable designs of God. The Father accepts her living sacrifice and transforms it into blessing and consolation for all those who suffer on earth. As they see Mary next to you, eager to share your cross, they receive hope and strength to offer their pain.

  1. P. Jesus, you who offer your cup of sorrow to those you love,

have mercy on us!

You who welcome your Mother to share your loving Passion,

have mercy on us!

You who offer us in Mary a source of consolation,

have mercy on us!

  1. P. Righteous Father, you wanted Mary to be present and to participate in the sacrifice of your Son. You also console us in our pains with his presence. Grant that we become true comforters for those who suffer in body and spirit. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.          - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.                   - Miserere nostri.

Quis est homo qui non fleret,
matrem Christi si videret
in tanto supplicio?

Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ's dear Mother to behold?

 5th Station

Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus
to carry the cross

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “They brought Jesus to the place called ‘Golgotha’, they enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross.” (Mark 15:21)

  1. Lord Jesus, your grateful gaze is upon Simon of Cyrene. In his heart you find a sense of compulsion for the burden of your cross, an unwanted weight. You accept to be helped by those who are not yet yours; you appreciate the toil of those who go up with you, even if forced to do. Your cross will communicate to them blessing and salvation, since your love does not abandon those who take a step for you.

Jesus, we adore you while you welcome the help of mankind, even if it is not yet a sign of perfect love.

  1. Jesus, you who make strong those who have shown their weakness,

 have mercy on us!

You who love those who do not love you yet,       have mercy on us!

You who bless those who share with you the way of pain, have mercy on us!

  1. Merciful Father, who allow us to walk with your Son Jesus towards the path of complete offering, grant us to love him and to share his loving sacrifice.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.        - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.                 - Miserere nostri.

Quis non posset contristari
Christi Matrem contemplari
dolentem cum Filio?

Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Mother’s pain untold?

 6th Station

Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “Of you my heart has said, ‘Seek his face!’ Your face, o Lord, I seek; do not turn away from me.” (Psalm 27:8)

“As many people were aghast at him -- he was so inhumanly disfigured that he no longer looked like a man”. (Isaiah 52:14)

  1. Lord Jesus, a small gesture of love reaches you. Veronica brings on the shroud the image of your suffering and bleeding face. And perhaps she does not realize that your light, your peace and your glory now shine even from her face and her eyes, since she have loved you. Even more than the shroud, tight as a treasure in her hands, her own face has become a true image of yours!

  1. Jesus, you who manifest the glory of God, have mercy on us!

You who shine on the face of those who love you,   have mercy on us!

You who want to be loved even by us sinners,          have mercy on us!

  1. Good Father, who allows humans to become living images of your Son by loving the poor and the suffering, give us to grow in this love, so that even our life may shine your glory.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.        - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.                 - Miserere nostri.

Pro peccatis suæ gentis
vidit Iesum in tormentis,
et flagellis subditum.

For the sins of His own nation,
She saw Jesus wracked with torment,
All with scourges rent:

7th Station

Jesus falls the second time

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “Save me, God, I am sinking in the deepest swamp and there is no firm ground. It is for you I bear insults, my face is covered with shame” (Psalm 69)

  1. Lord Jesus, there is no support for you. You fall again, and you do not complain. You offer even these unexpected events to the Father, suffering upon suffering, cross upon cross. You bear all, all accept all, even the insults that accompany the fall.

Your falls grant us, disobedient, to return with a child’s heart to that Father whom we have abandoned. We want to look for the Word that came out of his mouth and to fulfill it.

  1. Jesus, you who are victim in place of sinners,    have mercy on us!

You who are sacrifice that gives life to us dead,      have mercy on us!

You who are obedient and meek love,        have mercy on us!

  1. O Merciful Father, who ask your Son to endure many sufferings with steadfast love to show us your fatherhood, grant us the grace to welcome your Word and to obey you by a steadfast will.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.       - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.                - Miserere nostri.

Vidit suum dulcem Natum
moriendo desolatum,
dum emisit spiritum.

She beheld her tender Child,
Saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His spirit forth He sent.

8th Station

Jesus consoles the women of Jerusalem

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “Large numbers of people followed him, and women too, who mourned and lamented for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather for yourselves and for your children’.” (Luke 23,27-28)
  2. Lord Jesus, you are not pleased with our tears of compassion. Your way of the cross is not an imposition, it is not a compulsion, it is not a sad destiny. Your way to the cross is a free offering of your life. He who offers himself should not be pitied, but followed. He who offers himself resembles the Father and share the life of God himself. Let us cry for those who are not able to offer themselves, because those who do not offer themselves are out of love, far from God, in the darkness of sin. “Weep over yourself and your children”.

  1. Jesus, you who offer yourself

as a willing sacrifice to the Father,             have mercy on us!

You who are faithful up to the end,          have mercy on us!

You who are a source of joy and consolation,  have mercy on us!

  1. Holy Father, you welcome the sufferings of Jesus as a gift: grant us the grace to convert ourselves from selfishness, which makes many cry, so that we may become a gift of love for our brethren.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.      - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.              - Miserere nostri.

Eia, Mater, fons amoris
me sentire vim doloris
fac, ut tecum lugeam.

O thou Mother! fount of love!
Touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord:

 9th Station

Jesus falls the third time

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “When I stumble they gather in glee, gather around me; strangers I never even knew tear me apart incessantly. If I fall they surround me, grinding their teeth at me.” (Psalm 35:15-16)

  1. Lord Jesus, you are again motionless on the ground, crushed by the weight of the cross. Those who see you are pleased with your suffering. And you allow yourself to be humiliated, do not open your mouth, like a lamb led to the slaughter, as a mute sheep in front of its shearers (cf Is 53:7). Violence does not infect you. Hatred does not penetrate your soul, not even discouragement or rebellion in your heart. With silence you manifest your faithfulness to the Father who sent you as a lamb among wolves.

  1. Jesus, you who have returned good for evil, have mercy on us!

You who in the midst of hatred continue to love,   have mercy on us!

You who are like a meek lamb among wolves,     have mercy on us!

  1. Glorious Father, we thank you for giving us in Jesus a powerful sign of your infinite love; grant us to be watchful so that the feelings of violence and revenge may not enter our hearts and we may be clothed of your meekness, humility and patience.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.     - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.           - Miserere nostri.

Fac, ut ardeat cor meum
in amando Christum Deum
ut sibi complaceam.

Make me feel as thou hast felt;
make my soul to glow and melt
with the love of Christ my Lord.

10th Station

Jesus is stripped of His garments

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares, one for each soldier. His undergarment was seamless, woven in one piece from neck to hem; so they said to one another, ‘Instead of tearing it, let’s throw dice to decide who is to have it.’ In this way the words of Scripture were fulfilled: ‘They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothes.” (John 19:23-24)

  1. Lord Jesus, your pure body - an instrument of love alone - already scourged and tormented is delivered to the gaze of evil and envious eyes. Your executioners cast lots. Their ruthless game costs you nudity. But your nudity is not that of Adam, sign and result of sin, a terrible situation of inner misery. Your nudity is the consequence of love that gives everything, because you are clothed with the love of the Father for us.

  1. Jesus, you who have given your garments to human beings,

 have mercy on us!

You who are dressed in majesty and splendor,      have mercy on us!

You who grant us to contemplate the eternal Word of the Father,

  have mercy on us!

  1. Holy Father, your Son is naked before our eyes as we are naked at your gaze that penetrates everything. Clothe us as new human beings, who grow in pure love and holiness.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.        - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.             - Miserere nostri.

Sancta Mater, istud agas,
crucifixi fige plagas
cordi meo valide.

Holy Mother! pierce me through,
in my heart each wound renew
of my Savior crucified:

11th Station

Jesus is nailed to the cross

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “When they reached the place called The Skull, there they crucified him and the two criminals, one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing.’ Above his head was placed the charge against him; it read: ‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews’.” (Luke 23:33-34; Matthew 27:37)

  1. Lord Jesus, you are nailed to the wood, you are covered by blood. The one who sees you judges you as a criminal, like the other two, who are crucified next to you. While everyone is pleased with your suffering and your death, you take care of their salvation. You see sin and ask for forgiveness. Your love finds even a justification, the only one, in the ignorance of human beings: You says: “They do not know what they are doing”. Often we do not know what we do, we do not realize that in our feelings the evil one hides: and we listen to it, moving our hearts to hatred, to envy, to the contempt of others!

Forgive us again, Lord Jesus.

  1. Jesus, you who are nailed to the cross,    have mercy on us!

You who do not reply with insults, but with forgiveness,

have mercy on us!

You who want me to share in your love,    have mercy on us!

  1. Good Father, you who live united to your Son and with him you are rejected by human beings, grant us to fulfill his desire for universal salvation, which reaches to forgive and to ask forgiveness for his executioners. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.     - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.           - Miserere nostri.

Tui Nati vulnerati,
tam dignati pro me pati,
pœnas mecum divide.

Let me share with thee His pain,
who for all my sins was slain,
who for me in torments died.

12th Station

 Jesus dies on the cross

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’

The veil of the Sanctuary was torn right down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice saying, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’ With these words he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he gave praise to God and said, ‘Truly, this was an upright man’.” (Mark 15:34; Luke 23:45-47).

  1. Lord Jesus, your last prayer is a cry that pierces the heavens: a cry that reaches the heart of the Father, who in you loves all humanity in every age of human history. The Father knows he has not abandoned you! You yourself can not see the Father with your eyes, but you are sure that his hands are ready to welcome your spirit and to spread him over the whole earth, wherever there is a soul opened up to you. That God who “abandoned” you for love, with love welcomes you forever.

  1. Jesus, you who are ceaseless prayer,   have mercy on us!

You who turn your eyes and heart to your Father,   have mercy on us!

You who suffer for us the abandonment of God,      have mercy on us!

  1. Hidden Father, sin and pain prevent us from seeing you and understanding the secrets of your love. For the death of Jesus, your Son and our friend, give us to be born again as your true children, so that we may bear in our life the signs of your love.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.      - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.           - Miserere nostri.

Fac me tecum pie flere,
crucifixo condolere,
donec ego vixero.

Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning Him who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live:

13th Station

Jesus is taken down from the cross

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “When they came to Jesus, they saw he was already dead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water.”

“It was now evening, there came Joseph of Arimathaea, and he boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He granted the corpse to Joseph who bought a shroud, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the shroud.” (John 19:33-34; Mark 15:42).

  1. Lord Jesus, even through death, you continue to be hated and loved. A soldier opens your side while a friend buys for you a shroud. That shot of a spear becomes a new way to show the fruits of your death: blood and water. Blood that redeems and water that gives life come out of your open side. I adore you, Lord Jesus! I get my life from your death! As you come down from the cross and are wrapped in the shroud of Joseph of Arimathea, I offer you my body as a place where you can dwell, love and forgive.

  1. Jesus, you who died for love, have mercy on us!

You who are the garment that covers our nakedness, have mercy on us!

You who open the kingdom of heaven to humanity,   have mercy on us!

  1. Father, who in Jesus, pierced by the spear and deposed from the cross, has shown us the fullness of your love, grant us to be healed from the wounds of your Son; grant us to love your will and to welcome your life within us.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.   - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.           - Miserere nostri.

Juxta Crucem tecum stare,
et me tibi sociare
in planctu desidero.

By the Cross with thee to stay,
there with thee to weep and pray,
is all I ask of thee to give.

14th Station

Jesus is laid in the Holy Sepulchre

We adore You, O Christ,                                     Adoramus te, Christe,

and we bless You.                                                 et benedicimus tibi.

Because by Your Holy Cross,                           Quia per sanctam Crucem

You have redeemed the world.                        redemisti mundum.

  1. “At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been buried.” “So Joseph took the body, then rolled a large stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away. It was Preparation day and the Sabbath was beginning to grow light.” (John 19,41; Matthew 27,60; Luke 23,54).

  1. Lord Jesus, closed in the tomb like every human corpse, you are strength and energy waiting for the new day. You are love, and love is not extinguished by the sepulcher: it is only waiting! Your loving Mother is waiting with you. She, who in her loneliness brought you into her womb and waited for your mysterious birth, now, still alone among all, awaits the hour of your resurrection. I await your manifestation too. I want to share the love of Joseph of Arimathea and the women for you: a love that desires you to be honored and respected.

  1. Jesus, you who have been honored by Joseph of Arimathea, have mercy on us!

You who bless the simple and courageous love,   have mercy on us!

You who are buried like any human being,            have mercy on us!

  1. Father, who gave a mortal body to your Son and desired him honored in death, grant us to be enclosed with him in your heart, so that we may be resurrected to new life, bringing into the world only the splendor of your light!

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Have mercy on us, O Lord.       - Miserere nostri, Domine.

Have mercy on us.          - Miserere nostri.

Virgo virginum præclara,
mihi iam non sis amara,
fac me tecum plangere.

Virgin of all virgins blest!,
Listen to my fond request:
let me share thy grief divine;

Concluding Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument

of your peace,

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

Where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master,

Grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled as to console;

To be understood as to understand;

To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that

we are born to eternal life.

(St. Francis of Assisi)
