1st reading Sir 24,1-4.8-12 from Psalm 147 2nd reading Eph 1,3-6.15-18 Gospel Jn 1,1-18
The book of Sirach is praising God’s wisdom: it is introduced as a person who is residing among men, works among them, shines, illuminates. It has made its home in Jacob, so in the people chosen by God so it may bring it to the whole world.
We understand that this is a subtle and prophetic way to introduce the Son of God made flesh, who arrives in the world as great news to bring men a different and blessing word. Saint John, in the Gospel, uses the term we translate as “Word”, to indicate the same Wisdom which has become a voice for our ears to hear.
The Word is the Word of God, the Word which is telling us about the love and joy of God Himself. «The Word became flesh», John tells us. So, the Word has become visibile for us, who can get close to Him, meet Him, listen to Him, touch, contemplate Him, who can obey Him, and let Him change and guide us. «We saw his glory», John continues, «the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth».
The mystery we are celebrating, and which is described by these words, is the mystery of God’s glory and the glory of the Word. We will hear Jesus talking about glory when the time to climb the Calvary draws nearer. That will be the place and the time in which it will be possible to see in all its truth God’s love, a faithful, merciful, complete love.
In fact, the Son comes “full of grace and truth”, enveloped in the Father’s selfless love (grace) which shows in all His depth God’s being (truth). This is why He is introduced also as light, the light which shines in the darkness. Everything around us is darkness: who among us know why they exist? Not knowing this makes all our days like steps taken in the dark: we do not know their use and which effects they have. The Word of God is light: the love God reaches us with tells us what is the meaning of our being here and our labouring here on earth. We are here to welcome and give others God Himself, to give Him space in this world, from which men’s sin has drawn Him away, to make His loving wisdom shine by living in obedience.
The mystery of the coming of the Son of God is the mystery that wants to bring back the man, fish him out of the abyss of evil and suffering which his selfishness and his disobedience have thrown him in.
Entire peoples are still immersed in this suffering and cannot see any glimmer of hope of a new and serene life. This comes with the knowledge of the Word made flesh, with Jesus and by meeting Him.
Saint Paul does not stop praying that this knowledge may deepen in the mind and the life of the Christians: they need to share it with the whole world. It will be hard for them and even something bringing suffering; but these are labouring and suffering filling them with joy and peace, because they will see that their life is precious for the whole world.
God’s wisdom is truly blessed and worthy of admiration. We, who are guided by it, continue faithfully our service of love to the whole world. And we pray and desire that in this new year we may be able to give Jesus to at least some of the people we meet!
