1/8 SAT 17th Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(memorial: St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, bishop and doctor, †1787)

Jer 26:11-16, 24; Ps 68; Mt 14:1-12

Amend your ways and your doings Jer 26:13

The prophet Jeremiah is about to be judged and condemned. He continues to call the entire people to obedience to God. It is important to listen to Him and to align one's life with His wisdom. God's love for the little ones and the poor must pervade human justice; otherwise, it is unworthy of God and generates ruin and suffering for the whole people.

2/8 SUN 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A [II]

Is 55:1-3; Ps 144; Rom 8:35, 37-39;

Mt 14:13-21

He withdrew to a deserted place, by himself Mt 14:13

Jesus, having learned of the death of John the Baptist at the hands of Herod, withdraws, fearing that his wickedness might reach him as well. However, for Jesus, being apart means being in prayer and listening to the Father. Yet now men can no longer do without Him: he is sought out by both the healthy and the sick, whom he heals. Nevertheless, Herod will not reward him for healing his suffering subjects.

3/8 MON 18th Week in Ordinary Time [II]

Jer 28:1-17; Ps 118; Mt 14:22-36

Lord, save me! Mt 14:30

This is the cry of Peter, unable to remain in faith when he sees himself in danger. He is walking on the water, like Jesus, and is going towards him. Just a gust of wind is enough for him to forget the Lord who is right in front of him. As he begins to sink, he raises a cry for help. And behold, Jesus is ready to grab him to save him.

4/8 TUE 18th Week in Ordinary Time [II]

(memorial: St. John Vianney, priest, † 1859)

Jer 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22; Ps 101;

Mt 15:1-2, 10-14

They are blind guides of the blind Mt 15:14

Jesus has great courage to speak like this. He is referring to the scribes and the Pharisees, the people most esteemed by the people and the most authoritative for their religious commitment. Why does Jesus have to say that they are blind? They do not see that He is the Son of God. And therefore, they will not lead anyone to the Father.

5/8 WED 18th Week in Ordinary Time [II]

(optional memorial: Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major)

Jer 31:1-7; Psalm: Jer 31:10-13; Mt 15:21-28

And her daughter was healed instantly Mt 15:28

From that moment, when Jesus declared that the faith of that woman was great. How did Jesus see the greatness of her faith? He saw the insistence, the perseverance, and the humility of the woman. She continued to hope in Jesus, three times she called him Lord, and declared that in any case, the word of Jesus is truth.

6/8 THU TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD [P]

Dn 7:9-10, 13-14; or 2Pt 1:16-19; Ps 96;

Mt 17:1-9

A bright cloud overshadowed them Mt 17:5

The three disciples on the mountain are praying with Jesus. It is true that Peter's intervention disturbed Jesus' conversation with Moses and Elijah, but no one paid attention to him. Now the cloud, which is also bright like the face and clothes of the Lord, covers them. They are in darkness so that they can better listen to the words coming from the cloud. You remember them and treasure them: they prepare you to see, from now on, Jesus alone.

7/8 FRI 18th Week in Ordinary Time [II]

(optional memorial: Sts. Sixtus II, pope, and Companions, martyrs, † 258; St. Cajetan, priest, † 1547)

Na 2:1, 3; 3:1-3, 6-7; Ps: Dt 32:35-41;

Mt 16:24-28

He will repay everyone for what has been done Mt 16:27

What are the actions that the Lord wants to see? They are those He Himself had remembered: following Him, denying oneself, taking up one’s cross. Those who live in this way will receive from God an eternal, divine reward, such that you cannot even imagine how pleasing, beautiful, and rich it is!

8/8 SAT 18th Week in Ordinary Time [II]

(memorial: St. Dominic, priest, † 1221)

Hab 1:12 - 2:4; Ps 9; Mt 17:14-20

You faithless and perverse generation Mt 17:17

Jesus is amazed that even His own disciples cannot recognize, from the signs He has performed, that the power of God’s love is at work in Him. They would like to act on their own, without Him... But the demon flees only from the presence of Jesus. They should have invoked Him with humility.

9/8 SUN 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A [III]

1 Kngs 19:9.11-13; Ps 84; Rom 9:1-5;

Mt 14:22-33

You of little faith, why did you doubt? Mt 14:31

Jesus rebukes Peter. A gust of wind was enough to make him forget that He was there. Now He has already taken his hand and brought him back into the boat with the others, that is, into the Church: the rebuke comes after the danger has passed. This is how Jesus’ tenderness acts.

10/8 MON ST. LAWRENCE, Deacon and Martyr († 258) [P]

2 Cor 9:6-10; Ps 111; Jn 12:24-26

If it dies, it bears much fruit

Jn 12:24

Lawrence faces death without fear: love for Jesus is at work in him. He knows that his death is necessary for Jesus to receive testimony, and therefore he is not afraid. He will die, but many will receive life.

11/8 TUE 19th Week of Ordinary Time [III]

(memorial: St. Clare, Virgin, † 1253)

Ez 2:8 - 3:4; Ps 118; Mt 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

Unless you change and become like children... Mt 18:3

Saint Clare of Assisi helps us not only to understand but also to live out this word of Jesus. She considered Him her Lord and obeyed Him with the trust with which child listen to their father or mother. When I am a child, I do not whether Jesus is right or not, I simply do what He says. There is no need to doubt Him.

12/8 WED 19th Week of Ordinary Time [III]

(optional memorial: St. Jane Frances de Chantal, Religious, † 1641)

Ez 9:1-7; 10:18-22; Ps 112; Mt 18:15-20

For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them Mt 18:20

What is more necessary and beautiful for a home, a town, a parish, or a group? That Jesus be present there! If He is present, He will certainly not be idle. Where He is, miracles of love happen. Why then not gather in His name? Gather, not virtually through a television or smartphone, but truly, in such a way so that we must bear with one another, to love one another.

13/8 THU 19th Week of Ordinary Time [III]

(optional memorial: Sts. Ponziano, Pope, and Hippolytus, Priest, Martyrs, † 235)

Ez 12:1-12; Ps 77; Mt 18:21-19:1

Have patience with me, and I will pay you Mt 18:29

Jesus spoke these words to a servant who owed his master a debt. They suggest to us how to approach our Father. We are indebted to Him for everything, and we certainly cannot repay Him except in one way: it is He Himself who, by loving us, gives us the love to “return,” the love that satisfies His heart. By loving one another, we will fulfill His desire.

14/8 FRI 19th Week of Ordinary Time [III]

(memorial: St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, Priest and Martyr, † 1941)

Ez 16:1-15, 60, 63; Is 12:2-6; Mt 19:3-12

So they are no longer two, but one flesh Mt 19:6

When Adam, with surprise, found himself beside Eve as a free gift from God, he finally saw his life being fulfilled: without her, he was not a complete man, unable to love anyone. From her, he would receive help to obey God and fulfill His plan to give life to other men. With her, his humanity could imitate God, who gives Himself completely.

15/8 SAT THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY [P]

Rev 11:19; 12:1-6, 10; Ps 44;

1 Cor 15:20-27; Lk 1:39-56

And lifted up the lowly Lk 1:52

This word comes from the mouth of Mary. She could say it because it was what happened in her life. She was small, insignificant, ignored by everyone, and yet God made her the Mother of His Son, a participant in His glory. If the humble are exalted by God, should we not also honor them? And should we not strive to be humble and remain lowly, so as not to be deprived of the Father’s attention?

16/8 SUN 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A [IV]

Is 56:1, 6-7; Ps 66; Rom 11:13-15, 29-32;

Mt 15:21-28

Give her what she wants Mt 15:23

The apostles are tired of hearing the cries of that woman. They ask Jesus to respond to her, not because they have compassion for her or her daughter, but because her presence behind them is annoying. Jesus will answer her, not to please them, but because he sees in her a "great" faith, humble, and therefore, exemplary even for His apostles.

17/8 MON 20th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

Ez 24:15-24; Deut 32:18-21; Mt 19:16-22

Come! Follow me Mt 19:21

Do you know what happened? A young man approached Jesus to ask what he must do to have eternal life. Jesus is pleased with this question: finally, someone is asking him something serious! He is the life, the life that comes from God, and therefore eternal life. To have it, or rather, to live it, one must follow Jesus. Will that young man do it? He possessed many riches, they were important to him, and so he gave up life.

18/8 TUE 20th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

Ez 28:1-10; Deut 32:26-28, 30, 35-36;

Mt 19:23-30

For God all things are possible Mt 19:26

Jesus spoke of a camel passing through the eye of a needle. Is it possible? Is it possible for a rich man to be part of the kingdom of heaven? It is a gift from God, and God can also grant a rich man the grace to renounce his riches. This has happened many times throughout human history.

19/8 WED 20th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

Ez 34:11-12; Ps 23; Mt 20:1-16

You also go into the vineyard

Mt 20:7

A master in search of workers. Does he do this out of love for his vineyard, or for the love of those men, so that they do not remain idle? Or is it to enable them to provide food for their families? He does it so that he can reward them and to teach them not to envy, but also to desire the good of all, so that all may enjoy the free love of God.

20/8 THU 20th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

(memorial: St. Bernard, Abbot and Doctor, † 1153)

Ez 36:23-28; Ps 50; Mt 22:1-14

A man there was not wearing a wedding robe Mt 22:11

His clothing did not express joy for the wedding of the king's son. He entered proud of his own garment, for which he had no need to thank anyone. He stood out from all the others. His garment indicated that he lacked humility; therefore, he could not be in the kingdom of heaven.

21/8 FRI 20th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

(memorial: St. Pius X, Pope, † 1914)

Ez 37:1-14; Ps 106; Mt 22:34-40

You shall love your neighbor as yourself Mt 22:39

It is the commandment similar to the first, because it expresses the same capacity for love. "You shall love": it is a single command that covers and fills every one of our relationships we have, both with God and with men. It makes us almost equal to God, who is love!

22/8 SAT 20th Week in Ordinary Time [IV]

(memorial: Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen)

Ez 43:1-7; Ps 84; Mt 23:1-12

You are all brothers Mt 23:8

It is easy to say! It seems difficult to live it out. But the reality is this: we are brothers in the heart of God. Being brothers is a great joy; but, since we are selfish, staying consistent with this truth is challenging. We will accept from the Lord the grace to continue to convert, so that our brotherhood may be visible. Otherwise, how can we be children of God?

23/8 SUN 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A [I]

Is 22:19-23; Ps 137; Ro 11:33-36;

Mt 16:13-20

The gates of Hades will not prevail against it Mt 16:18

What does this mean? That the Church will not be destroyed? Jesus had ordered Satan in the desert, “Go away!" Satan left, but he did not stop tempting Jesus himself, and he will not stop tempting the Church. The command that Jesus addressed to him is still valid. It will not prevail. The Church will be alive and faithful to God, always. There will be traitors like Judas and deniers like Peter, but they will not make the Church disappear because Jesus is faithful to her!

24/8 MON ST. BARTHOLOMEW, Apostle [P]

Rev 21:9-14; Ps 144; Jn 1:45-51

You will see greater things than these Jn 1:50

Bartholomew-Nathaniel, was amazed that Jesus had seen him under the fig tree, that is busy reading and understanding the Scriptures. And Jesus responds that this is just the beginning. He will see the fulfillment of the Scriptures; he will see how the Word brought by the angels from heaven to earth is fulfilled precisely in him!

25/8 TUE 21st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(optional memorial: St. Louis, † 1270; St. Joseph Calasanz, Priest, † 1648)

2 Thess 2:1-3, 13-17; Ps 95; Mt 23:23-26

Woe to you... who have neglected ... mercy Mt 23:23

Jesus emphasizes that God should be known by men as He truly is. He is "merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love," as He has already said many times.

Do you want to make Him known to someone? Show them these attitudes present in you! Otherwise, you give false testimony.

26/8 WED 21st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

2 Thess 3:6-10, 16-18; Ps 127; Mt 23:27-32

Anyone unwilling to work should not eat 2 Thess 3:10

Even in the time of St. Paul, some members of the Christian community were lazy, listless, so much so that they lived idle, taking advantage of the hard work of others. The apostle has severe words for these slackers. Those who love God and follow Jesus seek to help and do not scorn hard work. They take it upon themselves, as their own cross, to carry joyfully.

27/8 THU 21st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(memorial: St. Monica, † 387)

1 Cor 1:1-9; Ps 144; Mt 24:42-51

Be ready Mt 24:44

Christians know that Jesus died, rose again, and sits at the right hand of the Father. How is their life now? They live "in the expectation of His coming," as we say at Mass. They know that the most beautiful thing is the encounter with Him, and He will come. When? It does not matter to know. We always keep ourselves ready for him.

28/8 FRI 21st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(memorial: St. Augustine, Bishop and Doctor,

† 430

1 Cor 1:17-25; Ps 32; Mt 25:1-13

They went out to meet the bridegroom Mt 25:1

Jesus had already presented himself a few times as the Bridegroom, the one who lives the faithful and complete love of God for the people. It is beautiful to celebrate for Him! With today's parable, He tells us how he wishes to be awaited. Those who wait for him must prepare and orient everything towards this; otherwise, they will not be ready.

29/8 SAT Memorial of the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist [P]

Jer 1:17-19; Ps 70; Mk 6:17-29

He liked to listen to him Mk 6:20

Herod listened willingly to John, who was filled with divine wisdom and announced Jesus. He remained perplexed because John's words revealed his own sins. However, it is not enough to listen willingly. How then did he come to kill him? Those who truly listen change their lives, meaning they obey. Only then do they unite with God and live his life and his love.

30/8 SUN 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A [II]

Jer 20:7-9; Ps 62; Rom 12:1-2; Mt 16:21-27

And those who lose their life for my sake will find it Mt 16:25

Jesus announced His death to His disciples. And they? They are disciples who follow Him: will they also face rejection from men, even persecution? They must be prepared. Living without suffering for Jesus and with Him risks becoming a life without flavor. I will always live with Him, even when it costs effort or suffering; so my life will be true and will be a gift from God to the world.

31/8 MON 22nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

1 Cor 2:1-5; Ps 118; Lk 4:16-30

But he passed through the midst of them, and went on His way Lk 4:30

On weekdays, we begin the Gospel according to Luke. Jesus, in Nazareth, read some verses from the prophet Isaiah. There, in His village, He was known as the son of Joseph, but He pointed out that the very Word He read made Him known in truth. His fellow villagers were so indignant that they wanted to kill Him. Jesus was not afraid; He passed through the crowd, as if to say: look at Me carefully, one day you will seek Me for the salvation of God.
