1/1 THU THE MOST HOLY MOTHER of GOD [P]

Nm 6:22-27; Ps 66; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:16-21

The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. Nm 6:26

According to the liturgy of the temple, at the end of the celebration, the priest would bless the people with these words while raising his hands. In the heart of Mary, whom we today venerate as the "Mother of God," these words penetrated deeply, bringing forth fruit in the Church and in the world. At Holy Mass, we always receive the Lord's blessing. Today's blessing, on the first day of the year, is precious and not to be missed!

2/1 FRI Christmas Time [P]

(memorial: Sts. Basil the Great, † 379, and Gregory Nazianzen, † 390, bishops and doctors)

1 Jn 2:22-28; Ps 97; Jn 1:19-28

This is the promise he made to us: eternal life. 1 Jn 2:25

What is eternal life? Is it what we will live after our death? Yes, but not only that. It is the life that allows us to be in communion with God even now. It begins with our response to Jesus' call and continues in our participation in the Christian community. Within this community are Saints Basil and Gregory of Nazianzus, who welcome us and transmit to us their love for Jesus, a life without limits!

3/1 SAT Christmas Time [P]

(optional memorial: The Most Holy Name of Jesus)

1 Jn 2:29 - 3:6; Ps 97; Jn 1:29-34

He is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. Jn 1:33

These are the words of John the Baptist, the last of the prophets: he recognized Jesus as the promised and awaited Messiah, the one who “baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”
We call you by name, Jesus,
and you give us your Spirit: The Spirit of peace, of generosity, of humility… Thank you, Jesus, for your Holy Name!

4/1 SUN 2nd Sunday after Christmas [II]

Sir 24:1-2,8-12; Ps 147; Eph 1:3-6,15-18; Jn 1:1-18

Those who believe... are born of God Jn 1:13

Let us continue to live Christmas: Jesus is present! We too are born again, as children of God, children of that God who is solely love. We can call Him "Father, Daddy." We can imitate Him by imitating Jesus. Truly, great is the mystery of Christmas!

5/1 MON Christmas Time [P]

1 Jn 3:11-21; Ps 99; Jn 1:43-51

God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything 1 Jn 3:20

It is a grace when our hearts reproach us for some lack of love. However, let us cast away discouragement, which comes from the evil one! Instead, let us remain turned toward the Lord with trust and humility, because He is greater than our heart and knows everything: He also knows those burdens weighing on our hearts, which only He can lift.

6/1 TUE EPIPHANY of the LORD [P]

Is 60:1-6; Ps 71; Eph 3:2-3,5-6; Mt 2:1-12

The glory of the Lord has risen upon you Is 60:1

Today, the Word of God announces to us that Jesus, the Son of God, has come to the earth for all people of every race and religion. He is their salvation and their peace. The Church will be the star that guides them to Him. By living His love, it will welcome and lead all those who, attracted by the Father, seek a new life.

7/1 WED Christmas Time [P]

(optional memorial: St. Raymond of Peñafort, priest, † 1275; Diocese of Trento: optional memorial: St. Valentine, bishop)

1 Jn 3:22 - 4:6; Ps 2; Mt 4:12-17,23-25

You are from God, little children. 1 Jn 4:4

We are concluding the Christmas festivities. We have meditated on the reality of Jesus’ coming into the world. The Apostle had affirmed: "Whoever believes that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God." We thank the Apostle John for this revelation that confirms us in true faith and defends us from the spirit of other beliefs.

8/1 THU Christmas Time [P]

1 Jn 4:7-10; Ps 71; Mk 6:34-44

All ate and were filled Mk 6:42

To those who stay with Jesus to listen to His teachings, He does not fail to provide daily bread. He shows us this today. In unity with His Father, He provides it abundantly, multiplying the little that His followers offer him.

Those who seek the Lord lack nothing, as the psalm says.

Thank you, Lord Jesus!

9/1 FRI Christmas Time [P]

1 Jn 4:11-18; Ps 71; Mk 6:45-52

He got into the boat with them and the wind ceased Mk 6:51

Jesus had withdrawn to pray. Knowing that his followers were in trouble at sea due to the contrary wind, he reaches to them and saves them. We Christians will imitate Jesus by trying to withdraw often in prayer, alone with Him. We will receive light and strength to be of help to the Church in its difficulties and sufferings.

10/1 SAT Christmas Time [P]

1 Jn 4:19-5:4; Ps 71; Lk 4:14-22

Whoever loves God must also love his brother 1 John 4:21

Whoever does not love their brothers and sisters deludes themselves into thinking they love God; in reality, they cause Him suffering and displeasure. The Father certainly does not feel loved if I do not love or, worse, hate any of His children. Before God, I do not exist alone, but I exist with many brothers, all His children. To love God means to love who and what He loves.

11/1 SUN THE BAPTISM of the LORD Year A [P]

Is 42:1-4, 6-7; Ps 29; Acts 10:34-38; Mt 3:13-17

In him I am well pleased Mt 3:17

Jesus, having came to John the Baptist to receive baptism, as he came out of the water, he saw the heavens open and the Holy Spirit descending upon Him in the form of a dove. Then a voice from heaven said: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

I will love and listen to Jesus, who is also, for me, like for the Father, a source of joy and continual satisfaction.

12/1 MON 1st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

1 Sam 1:1-8; Ps 115; Mk 1:14-20

They followed him Mk 1:20

This is what each of us would wish to do. After joyously and fraternally celebrating the birth of Jesus, we now see Him begin his mission, speaking to us about the kingdom of heaven. Thank you, Jesus, for noticing Simon, Andrew, James, and John. They could not resist your call! And their being brothers becomes a beautiful sign in the kingdom.

13/1 TUE 1st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(memorial: St. Hilary, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, †367)

1 Sam 1:9-20; Ps: 1 Sam 2:1, 4-8; Mk 1:21-28

They were astounded at his teaching Mk 1:22

Jesus is the Word of God the Father. He speaks out of love, with love, and about love. This is why He is authoritative and appreciated. His message is accompanied by signs of healing and liberation for humanity. Everyone is astonished, because no one else could convey God's love to people like Jesus.

14/1 WED 1st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

1 Sam 3:1-10, 19-20; Ps 40; Mk 1:29-39

Here I am, for you called me
1 Sam 3:8

It was already the third time Samuel heard the voice calling him in the night. Eli, the priest of the temple, understood that it was the voice of the Lord, and told him to respond without hesitation as soon as he heard it again. "Here I am!" Thank you, Jesus: you have also let me hear your voice. Thank you for those who have helped me recognize it, especially for my spiritual father: bless him always!

15/1 THU 1st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(Diocese of Trento: memorial: St. Romedio, hermit)

1 Sam 4:1b-11; Ps 44; Mk 1:40-45

They came to him from all sides Mk 1:45

Jesus had to withdraw to a deserted place for having touched a leper. But the people knew that He was not infected; on the contrary, He offered healing! Thank you, Jesus: through your Sacraments, you touch and heal the bodies and souls of your children. Thank you also for those who withdraw in solitude to lead a life of prayer with you, like St. Romedio, whose memory we celebrate today.

16/1 FRI 1st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

1 Sam 8:4-7, 10-22a; Ps 89; Mk 2:1-12

We have never seen anything like this Mk 2:12

These words express not only the amazement of those who witnessed the healing of the paralytic but also praise to God. They had seen not only a man healed but, more importantly, a man forgiven by God. How many "paralytics" does the Lord Jesus continue to raise and make walk again in his Church by forgiving their sins! Among these, there is also me, who can say: "I have never seen a God who forgives through the voice of a man!"

17/1 SAT 1st Week in Ordinary Time [I]

(Memorial: St. Anthony, Abbot, †356)

1 Sam 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1a; Ps 21; Mk 2:13-17

There were many who followed him Mk 2:15

Among those following Jesus were men and women living in sin, recognized by all. Jesus you do not turn away or despise anyone; Your closeness, Your love, and the power of Your Spirit are the only remedy for everyone. Thank you, Jesus, for the desire You place in my heart to be close to you!

18/1 SUN 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A [II]

BEGINNING OF THE OCTAVE OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

Is 49:3, 5-6; Ps 39; 1 Cor 1:1-3; Jn 1:29-34

This is the Son of God Jn 1:34

As soon as Jesus is immersed in the water, John sees the Spirit descend upon him like a dove, according to the revelation he received. He connects the events and can thus affirm that Jesus is the Son of God! Thank you, Jesus, that through the Holy Spirit, who rests upon You, You will bring your Church to the desired unity.

19/1 MON 2nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

Octave of PRAYER for CHRISTIAN UNITY

1 Sam 15:16-23; Ps 49; Mk 2:18-22

Then they will fast on that day Mk 2:20

Today is one of those days when Jesus is taken away from us: the division of the Churches hides Him from us. There is a need to fast, to strengthen the prayer for the unity of us Christians, to ask the Father for the gift that our pride has ruined and is destroying. He can heal the wounds of the Church, the unfaithful bride, always so beloved by Jesus the Bridegroom.

20/1 TUE 2nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

Octave of PRAYER for CHRISTIAN UNITY

(optional memorial: St. Fabian, Pope and martyr, † 3rd century; St. Sebastian, martyr, † 304)

1 Sam 16:1-7,10-13a; Ps 88; Mk 2:23-28

The Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David 1 Sam 16:13

This is what happened when the prophet Samuel anointed David with the oil of consecration as King. The Holy Spirit still obeys the ministers of the Lord, accompanying their words and actions with His coming, as forceful as water giving life. Thank you, Lord: you allow me to be part of the Church and to pray for the unity of all who believe in you!

21/1 WED 2nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

Octave of PRAYER for CHRISTIAN UNITY

(memorial: St. Agnes, virgin and martyr, † 304)

1 Sam 17:32-33,37,40-51; Ps 143; Mk 3:1-6

I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts 1 Sam 17:45

Thus spoke David as he faced the terrible giant and enemy Goliath with his sling and shepherd's staff, and defeated him. We too will conquer the enemies of our hearts and of the Church by facing them in the name of Jesus. In these days, we particularly invoke Him to overcome the divisions among us Christians.

22/1 THU 2nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

Octave of PRAYER for CHRISTIAN UNITY

(optional memorial: St. Vincent, deacon and martyr, † 303)

1 Sam 18:6-9;19:1-7; Ps 55; Mk 3:7-12

He sternly ordered them not to make him known Mk 3:12

Jesus is the source of unity: love for Him achieves it, by uniting hearts. Mere words, even if true and holy, without His love, like those spoken by the demons who called Him the Son of God, do not bear witness to Him. Being without love, they produce the opposite effect, drawing attention to themselves, to the demons themselves, rather than to Him, giving a false image of Him.

23/1 FRI 2nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

Octave of PRAYER for CHRISTIAN UNITY

1 Sam 24:3-21; Ps 56; Mk 3:13-19

He appointed Twelve,... and to have authority to cast out demons Mk 3:14

Truly, there is a need to free the heart from many demons and evil spirits that keep us enslaved to the thirst for power and money, to unrestrained pleasures, resentments, and envy... Only Jesus can do this, and He continues to do so through the Twelve and those they appoint in His Church. What joy it is to receive the announcement of His love, and to enjoy intimacy with Him, and unity with all believers.

24/1 SAT 2nd Week in Ordinary Time [II]

Octave of PRAYER for CHRISTIAN UNITY

(memorial: St. Francis de Sales, bishop and doctor, †1622)

2 Sam 1:1-4, 11-12, 17, 19, 23-27; Ps 79; Mk 3:20-21

Greatly beloved were you to me 2 Sam 1:26

Between David and Jonathan, there was true friendship, a fraternal relationship full of mutual respect. Likewise, Jesus, you desire the same among Christians, even if they are from different confessions. Through your prayer and ours, let such a miracle happen!

Saint Francis de Sales, who suffered and worked so much for the unity of the faithful, pray for us!

25/1 SUN 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A [III] Sunday of the WORD

END OF THE OCTAVE of PRAYER for CHRISTIAN UNITY

Is 8:23b-9:3; Ps 26; 1 Cor 1:10-13, 17; Mt 4:12-23

So that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power 1 Cor 1:17

Paul’s focus, and that of all the Lord’s ministers, is that it be recognized that the entire work of the Church draws its fruitfulness from the cross of Jesus. It is from the cross that the gift of the Holy Spirit flows, providing light to understand the Word and strength of unity among believers.

Grant us, Jesus, to carry your Holy Cross with love!

26/1 MON Sts. Timothy and Titus, bishops (memorial) [P]

2 Tim 1:1-8 or Tit 1:1-5; Ps 95; Lk 10:1-9

The kingdom of God has come near to you Lk 10:9

Through our lives of love and obedience to Jesus, we bring to those we meet the testimony and proof that God truly reigns and works. My mother used to point this out to me when she saw me serving at home with joy and promptness.

27/1 TUE 3rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

  • (optional memorial: St. Angela Merici, virgin, † 1540)

2 Sam 6:12b-15, 17-19; Ps 23; Mk 3:31-35

David danced before the Lord with all his might 2 Sam 6:14

Today's reading takes us back to when King David escorted the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh to Jerusalem. He went before the ark, singing and dancing with all his heart and joy. This reminds me of when during prayer meetings we were invited to raise our hands. This invitation, welcomed as if it were from the Lord, has become a help for me to praise the Lord, a source of joy and inner liberation.

28/1 WED 3rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

  • (memorial: St. Thomas Aquinas, priest and doctor of the Church, † 1274)

2 Sam 7:4-17; Ps 89; Mk 4:1-20

He said to them: “Listen!" Mk 4:2

Jesus, the good sower, is ready for the "sowing." As the Divine Teacher, He says: "Listen." This invitation was often repeated by God to His people, Israel. The good harvest will depend on the attentive listening that keeps His Word in the heart. If this is the case, the "soil" of our life will yield thirty, sixty, and even a hundredfold.

29/1 THU 3rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

  • (Diocese of Trento: optional memorial: St. Joseph Freinademetz, priest, † 1908)

2 Sam 7:18-19, 24-29; Ps 131; Mk 4:21-25

Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket? Mk 4:21

Lord Jesus, you are the light that comes from the Father! Without You, man does not realize and does not know he is loved. Without you, he has no life. We are the lamp that brings Your light. Placed in Your Church, it shines brightly over the darkness of the world.

30/1 FRI 3rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

2 Sam 11:1-4a, 5-10a, 13-17; Ps 50; Mk 4:26-34

He explained everything in private to his disciples Mk 4:34

Jesus explained to his disciples in private the parables he had told: the one about the seed that has within it the power to grow and bear fruit, and the parable of the mustard seed, which, though being the smallest of seeds, becomes a bush in which the birds make their nests.

Thank you, Jesus! We are that seed that you make grow, to give many the opportunity to find a place for their nest.

31/1 SAT 3rd Week in Ordinary Time [III]

(memorial: St. John Bosco, priest, †1888)

2 Sam 12:1-7a, 10-17; Ps 50; Mk 4:35-41

Have you still no faith? Mk 4:40

When we find ourselves in difficulty and danger, like the Apostles in the boat on the stormy sea, we feel fear, trepidation, and sometimes anguish. However, when we trust in Jesus, without giving up, with our "little" faith, peace returns to us. He has already helped us many times.

Thank you, Jesus, for being there and caring for us, even when it seems that You are asleep!
